Hex is seeking its first Engineering Director for AI Engineering to lead a team that blends research and technology to build innovative AI products. This role involves defining and executing research strategy, managing partnerships, driving technical content creation, and hiring/managing a team of AI engineers and researchers. The ideal candidate will have a passion for delivering exceptional AI-backed product experiences and a strong ability to attract and retain top talent.
Responsibilities
- Partner with the CEO and CTO to define and execute research strategy across post-training, model evaluation, search and retrieval, and continuous learning.
- Manage research partnerships with a wide range of organizations.
- Drive the production of high-quality technical content for sharing research outcomes externally.
- Hire and manage an exceptional team of AI engineers and researchers.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience leading applied research, AI engineering, or ML engineering teams.
- Deep expertise in modern AI technology and classical ML systems, including LLMs, transformer models, agentic workflows, context management, and agentic evaluations.
- Passion for delivering exceptional product experiences backed by AI and driving business outcomes.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to empower and uplevel product and engineering counterparts.
- Talent for attracting and retaining exceptional AI talent.
- Experience working with RL environments is a plus.
