Senior Systems Engineer, MCP Server Portals

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, implementation, and operation of globally distributed services connecting MCP clients to upstream servers.
• Own complex features and service improvements from conception to production support.
• Shape technical decisions for MCP Portals, including service boundaries, security controls, and reliability tradeoffs.
• Evolve MCP implementations based on specification changes, planning safe migrations for customers.
• Design and review authentication and authorization flows involving Cloudflare Access, OAuth, and credential handling.
• Improve the reliability and scalability of multi-tenant systems using production data to prioritize work.
• Strengthen observability through logs, metrics, traces, and alerts; participate in production support and incident response.
• Lead investigations of complex customer issues, identify root causes, and drive preventative fixes.
• Review designs and code, mentor engineers, and improve testing, deployment, and operational practices.
• Partner with product, security, and engineering teams to translate customer needs into product capabilities.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience building and operating distributed systems, backend services, network services, or infrastructure products.
• Demonstrated ownership of complex production services or projects, including architecture, implementation, rollout, and operational outcomes.
• Strong programming skills in TypeScript, JavaScript, Go, Rust, C++, or a similar production service language.
• Deep understanding of HTTP, APIs, proxies, streaming connections, and distributed-systems failure modes.
• Experience with authentication and authorization technologies (e.g., OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWTs, PKCE, policy-based access control).
• Experience designing or operating security-sensitive systems with sound judgment on identity, authorization, concurrency, and state management.
• Ability to diagnose production issues using logs, metrics, traces, and customer evidence, and drive durable fixes.
• Experience making backward-compatible changes to live systems and managing deployment/migration risks.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical tradeoffs, influence decisions, and mentor engineers.
• Experience with the Model Context Protocol (nice to have).
• Familiarity with the Cloudflare Developer Platform or other serverless edge-computing platforms (nice to have).
• Experience building gateways, forward proxies, or identity systems (nice to have).
