Applied AI Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer - EMEA
Unknown company· Paris
About Mistral At Mistral AI, we believe in the power of AI to simplify tasks, save time, and enhance learning and creativity. Our technology is designed to integrate seamlessly into daily working life. We democratize AI through high-performance, optimized, open-source and cutting-edge models, products and solutions. Our comprehensive AI platform is designed to meet enterprise needs, whether on-premises or in cloud environments. Our offerings include le Chat, the AI assistant for life and work. We are a dynamic, collaborative team passionate about AI and its potential to transform society. Our diverse workforce thrives in competitive environments and is committed to driving innovation. Our teams are distributed between France, USA, UK, Germany and Singapore. We are creative, low-ego and team-spirited. Join us to be part of a pioneering company shaping the future of AI. Together, we can make a meaningful impact. See more about our culture on https://mistral.ai/careers. About the team The Applied AI team is Mistral's customer-facing technical organization. We work directly with enterprise clients from pre-sales through implementation to deploy cutting-edge AI solutions that deliver measurable business impact. Our team combines deep ML expertise with strong customer engagement skills, operating like startup CTOs who own end-to-end project execution. Our SRE team works transversally across customer engagements, enabling value creation through Mistral tech - at scale. By joining the team you will bridge the gap between cutting-edge AI research and real-world enterprise applications, ensuring our solutions are robust, scalable, and aligned with both customer needs and Mistral's technological vision. About The Job You will be one of the founding engineers of the Applied AI SRE sub-team. Your mission, alongside the team, is to build and operate the framework to ensure Mistral’s solution delivery is reliable and sustainable - and applied uniformly across all our accounts, both Mistral-hosted and customer-hosted. You should already have a strong understanding of what operational excellence looks like, and you’re ready to scale your impact. You will operate in four concurrent modes: - BUILD - Design for a fleet of Mistral platforms and apps. Build proactivity to reduce reactivity. Productize reliability, author runbooks, create SLO templates, implement observability. - RUN - Operate the Tier-1 customer environments that Mistral are contracted to operate. Ensure SLO compliance, own on-call and incident response, manage drift, partner with Technical Support as L3 escalation, champion high signal post-mortems. - ENABLE - Productize how Mistral deploy, secure, and scale our Applied AI solutions. Engineer on-demand provisioning, author security baseline packages, embed security guardrails, automate everything. - SECURE - Own the security operations layer for our customer-side deployments. Lead CVE response across the fleet, ship supply-chain integrity controls (SBOM, signed images, provenance), co-page with InfoSec on security incidents, enforce secure-config baselines. This is a framework-first, fleet management role at heart. If you're excited by the difference between solving one customer's problem and structurally solving the class of problem for every customer, this is the role. How We Work in Applied AI • We care about people and outputs. • What matters is what you ship, not the time you spend on it • Bureaucracy is where urgency goes to vanish. You talk to whoever you need to talk to. The best idea wins, whether it comes from a principal engineer or someone in their first week. • Always ask why. The best solutions come from deep understanding, not from copying what worked before • We say what we mean. Feedback is direct, timely, and given because we care. • No politics. Low ego, high standards. • We embrace an unstructured environment and find joy in it. About you • Fluent in English. • 5+ years in SRE, Production Engineering, or DevOps, with a record of shipping tooling. • Strong multi-tenant Kubernetes fluency, namespace segmentation, network policy, RBAC, admission control, operations at scale. • On-call discipline: incident response, blameless post-mortem culture, runbook-first mindset. • Observability stack in production: Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Loki, Tempo, Signoz. • Infrastructure as code: Terraform, Ansible (or close equivalents). • Proficient in Python and/or Golang for tooling and automation. • Security mindset: you treat secure-SDLC, CVE response, and supply-chain integrity as reliability properties of the shipped artifact, not as someone else's job. • Strong written communication skills: runbooks, post-mortems, and customer-facing incident comms are core deliverables of this role. • Comfortable operating with high autonomy in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment — and disciplined enough to defend the team's scope when work tries to spill in. • Solid Linux internals, networking debug, and distributed-systems fundamentals. Strong plus • Cloud or application security background (AppSec, K8s security, supply chain — SBOM, cosign, SLSA).
At least one of our early hires must bring this; if it's you, flag it. • Experience operating LLM / model-serving stacks in production • Experience with multi-cloud or on-prem hybrid customer environments (AWS, GCP, Azure, sovereign clouds). • Open-source contributions, particularly in SRE, observability, or security tooling. In this role, you will: Build & Scale: Help us reach our goal of operating massive distributed compute and storage systems Global Orchestration: Architect and maintain multi-cluster orchestration layers to optimize workload placement across diverse hardware and regions. Design Future-Proof Storage: Architect our transition to modern storage formats to handle fine-tuning datasets at a scale that anticipates exabyte growth. Platform Engineering: Contribute to the development of our internal training platform, ensuring seamless model training and fine-tuning capabilities across Kubernetes and SLURM based environments. Metadata & Lineage: Implement and manage systems to provide clear visibility and lineage as our data and model pipelines grow in complexity. Operational Excellence: Use modern deployment workflows to manage cloud-native deployments, ensuring our data platform can scale by orders of magnitude while remaining reliable and efficient. You might thrive in this role if you: Have 4+ years of experience in Data Infrastructure, MLOps, or Infrastructure Engineering. Have experience or a strong interest in supporting foundational compute and storage platforms. Are proficient in Python and enjoy solving the "brittle data lake" problem with modern, columnar storage standards. Are well-versed in Kubernetes-native tooling and excited to debug large-scale distributed systems across multi-cluster environments. Take pride in building and operating scalable, reliable, and secure systems from the ground up. Together, we can make a meaningful impact. See more about our culture on https://mistral.ai/careers. Role summary Embedded directly in a product team as search, chat, documents, or audio, you'll improve AI-powered features through rigorous evaluation, prompt and orchestration design, and rapid experimentation. You'll own your domain's AI quality end-to-end: define what "good" looks like, measure it, run experiments, and ship what works. Work with Science to deliver measurable improvements to quality, latency, safety, and reliability. What you will do • Design and run evaluations for your product area: reference tests, heuristics, model-graded checks tailored to search relevance, chat quality, document understanding, or audio performance. • Define and track metrics that matter: task success, helpfulness, hallucination proxies, safety flags, latency, cost. • Own prompt and orchestration design: write, test, and iterate on prompts and system prompts as a core part of your work. • Run A/B tests on prompts, models, and configurations; analyze results; make rollout or rollback decisions from data. • Set up observability for LLM calls: structured logging, tracing, dashboards, alerts. • Operate model releases: canary and shadow traffic, sign-offs, SLO-based rollback criteria, regression detection. • Improve core behaviors in your product area, whether that's memory policies, intent classification, routing, tool-call reliability, or retrieval quality. • Create templates and documentation so other teams can author evals and ship safely. • Partner with Science to diagnose regressions and lead post-mortems. About you • 3-4 years of experience; backgrounds that fit well include ML engineers moving closer to product, or software engineers with real AI/ML production experience. • Strong TypeScript or Python skills - we have both tracks depending on team fit. • Production LLM experience: prompts, tool/function calling, system prompts. • Hands-on with evals and A/B testing; you can design metrics, not just run them. • Comfortable implementing directly in product code, not only notebooks. • Observability experience: logging, tracing, dashboards, alerting. • Product mindset: form hypotheses, run experiments, interpret results, ship. • Clear communication, autonomous, and oriented toward production impact over experimentation for its own sake. It would be ideal if you also have: • Safety systems experience: moderation, PII handling/redaction, guardrails. • Release operations: canary/shadowing, automated rollbacks, experiment platforms. • Prior work on search ranking, chat systems, document AI, or audio ML features. Hiring Process • Introduction call - 30 min • Hiring Manager interview - 30 min • Technical Rounds - Live-coding Interview - 45 min - AI Engineering Interview - 45 min • Culture-fit discussion - 30 min • References By applying, you agree to our Applicant Privacy Policy.

Together, we can make a meaningful impact. See more about our culture on https://mistral.ai/careers. About the Team The Proto Team is the technical pre-sales arm of the GTM organization. We operate at the intersection of product and customer, translating what Mistral’s technology can do into real-world solutions that deliver value fast. We work across three core areas: Deliver for customers: Build high-impact solutions on short timelines that prove value, unlock deals, and generate follow-on revenue. Ship for Mistral internally: Build full-stack applications that unblock teams across procurement, legal, and sales, applying the same engineering rigor to internal needs. Drive product innovation: Act as the product’s reality check. We test early, validate real use cases, push systems to their limits, and both improve and build the product itself. About the Role As an Applied AI Engineer in the Proto Team, you operate as a technical lead building production-grade AI systems in 4 to 8 weeks. You work across GTM, engineering, and applied AI, translating ambiguous business problems into working software. You own architecture, make technical decisions, and ship full-stack systems end to end. You work directly with customers and internal teams, moving from scoping to deployment with high autonomy and high velocity. You also sit close to the product loop: testing new capabilities, pushing systems to their limits, and turning real-world usage into product direction. This role is for fast-moving, highly curious builders who thrive in complexity and ambiguity. You move across domains quickly, ramp on new industries fast, and build with a strong hacker mindset and deep engineering instincts. What you will do Build and deliver full-stack AI solutions for global customers, owning the end-to-end execution from scoping to deployment as technical lead. Engage directly with customers to understand use cases, define requirements, and translate them into robust technical architectures and working systems. Collaborate across GTM, product, and engineering to ship solutions and contribute to internal tools, product improvements, and open-source initiatives. Solve complex applied AI problems across industries, working on real-world GenAI use cases and providing hands-on technical guidance throughout engagements. About You Core Fluent in English. Thrive in ambiguous, fast-paced environments with a strong problem-solving mindset, focused on building robust and scalable solutions. A builder at heart, balancing speed with precision and taking a methodical approach to technical execution. Strong communication skills, able to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. Client-focused, with a strong interest in innovation, new technologies, and improving existing systems. Comfortable collaborating across diverse teams and translating client needs into clear, actionable technical plans. Technical Competencies 2+ years experience as a hands-on engineer shipping AI-powered products (ML, software, or full-stack). Strong track record of building and deploying production systems end to end, not just prototypes. Comfortable working across the modern AI stack: LLMs, RAG, agentic systems, and their deployment in real-world applications. Strong software engineering fundamentals in Python, with experience building scalable backend systems (e.g., FastAPI, Pydantic). Working understanding of frontend development (e.g., React or Vue) to build usable interfaces when needed. Broad technical range: able to move fluidly between system design, infrastructure (e.g., Kubernetes), and applied LLM problem-solving, with a strong bias toward shipping. Ideally you have: Built or won hackathons / AI competitions, with a track record of shipping creative solutions under tight deadlines. Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, cloud platforms (AWS or GCP), and infrastructure tooling such as Terraform. Contributed to open-source projects, ideally in the LLM or applied AI space. Strong full-stack + AI experience, having built and shipped end-to-end applications (e.g., FastAPI, Next.js).
