About the job

The Scene Generation team at Torc is at the forefront of developing sensor simulation technology using Neural Rendering and generative models. This technology is crucial for Torc's data-driven simulator, enabling the creation of high-quality data from novel scenarios to address the domain data gap in autonomous driving. The team focuses on state-of-the-art approaches for generating realistic camera, LiDAR, and Radar sensor data, which are vital for training and validation across the entire autonomous vehicle stack. As a Staff ML Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in leading this team, defining its technical direction, and managing daily priorities to advance Torc's AV 3.0 strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the team's technical lead, owning key design decisions and driving consensus.
  • Set and own the technical vision and roadmap for Neural Rendering and generative modeling work.
  • Lead the team day-to-day, prioritizing work, unblocking engineers, and making technical approach decisions.
  • Implement and guide the team in applying the latest research advances in Neural Rendering and generative models.
  • Translate cutting-edge research into production-quality sensor simulation that scales perception simulation and training.
  • Own the neural rendering framework end-to-end, from research and design to deployment.
  • Understand cloud environment integration and automate pipelines for scaling target verification.
  • Design, implement, test, and deploy production-quality software.
  • Work within the cloud machine learning ecosystem, owning integration and scaling decisions.
  • Proactively assess current capabilities and propose solutions for improvement.
  • Drive alignment across team interfaces and represent the team's roadmap to leadership.
  • Mentor, coach, and grow engineers on the team, and participate in hiring and career development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering or related technical field with 10+ years of experience, OR Master's Degree with 7+ years of experience, OR PhD with 5+ years of experience.
  • Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks like PyTorch.
  • PhD or 8+ years of equivalent work experience in a relevant field, with industry experience shipping production software and leading technical teams.
  • Proven expertise in Neural Rendering (e.g., Neural Radiance Fields, 3D Gaussian Splatting) and generative models (e.g., Diffusion Models, Flow Matching).
  • Experience with production data in robotics and/or autonomous driving contexts.
  • Background in Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, 3D Reconstruction, or 3D Computer Vision.
  • Experience handling autonomous driving sensor data across multiple timestamps and modalities (cameras, LiDAR, radar).
  • Recognized as an expert in the discipline, conducting complex work with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with VDI and cloud-based machine learning development environments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team or serving as a technical lead.
  • Track record of mentoring and developing engineers.
  • Proven ability to design, maintain, and own team technical solutions and drive organizational alignment.
