About the job

Toast is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical vision and architecture for its new Intelligence Platform in Dublin. This platform will serve as a governed data layer, bringing restaurant intelligence to various stakeholders including prospects, operators, Toast IQ, and AI agents. The role involves hands-on development, making key design decisions for data processing, privacy, and serving, and mentoring other engineers. The goal is to evolve the platform from initial aggregated data to real-time access for AI agents, ensuring new data products are shipped quickly and safely.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical vision and end-to-end architecture of the Intelligence Platform.
  • Develop data processing, privacy, publishing, and serving components on Toast's data lake.
  • Build privacy and compliance features into the platform, ensuring data is aggregated, anonymized, and auditable.
  • Design efficient and scalable data access flows for tools and AI agents.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Data Platform, Marketing, Product, Legal, Data Science) to define technical roadmaps.
  • Establish and maintain high standards for reliability and quality.
  • Mentor other engineers through design and code reviews.
  • Utilize AI tooling to enhance productivity.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a focus on data-intensive or distributed systems.

  • Ability to understand and model complex data domains at scale.
  • Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, or another object-oriented language.
  • Experience with cloud-native data platforms on AWS.
  • Strong SQL and data modeling skills for large datasets.
  • Experience building data products or platforms for other teams.
  • Experience handling sensitive data responsibly (aggregation, anonymization, access controls).
  • Ability to clearly explain technical trade-offs to non-engineering stakeholders.
  • Experience with Apache Spark, Apache Iceberg, Snowflake, or Databricks is a plus.
