About the job
The AI Agent & Experience team at Toast is responsible for building the internal platform that enables AI to be a scalable force across the company's product development lifecycle. This includes developing infrastructure, governance, and tooling for AI. The team's products range from an LLM Proxy and AI Key Management to autonomous agents that integrate into the software development lifecycle. As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you will be instrumental in building these critical systems, including the LLM proxy, agentic workflows, and a plugin marketplace designed to bring AI-native development practices to various teams within Toast.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and ship features for AI platform infrastructure, including LLM proxy, AI key management, and observability pipelines.
- Develop and extend autonomous agents that participate in the SDLC, such as AI Review GitHub App and Developer Platform MCP integrations.
- Build and contribute to the internal plugin marketplace, creating plugins that embed architectural standards and quality practices into AI assistant behavior.
- Implement MCP services and service templates to accelerate the development of AI-powered workflows across Toast.
- Write high-quality, well-tested code and actively participate in design and code reviews.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand developer needs and deliver reliable platform solutions.
- Contribute to the team's adoption of agentic development practices and tooling.
- Leverage cutting-edge AI tools to enhance development workflows, improve velocity, and pioneer new building approaches.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree with 5+ years of experience in designing and implementing scalable backend services.
- Demonstrated experience building, deploying, or operating LLM-powered agents or AI-assisted developer tooling.
- Familiarity with AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) and interest in extending them.
- Experience with MCP (Model Context Protocol), tool use patterns, or similar agentic integration frameworks.
- Working knowledge of prompt engineering and LLM behavior.
- Strong foundation in Java, Kotlin, or another object-oriented language.
- Experience with distributed systems, REST APIs, and cloud-native infrastructure.
- Strong customer empathy and a drive to improve developer experience.
