About the job
AI Foundations is Toast's internal platform team for AI, responsible for building the infrastructure, governance, and developer tooling that enables AI to be a reliable, scalable force multiplier across the product development lifecycle. This includes products like the LLM Proxy, AI Key Management, Observability pipelines, the Claude Plugin Marketplace, and autonomous agents. We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead Internal Agent Experience operations, contributing to the strategy and delivery of how employees across all functions interact with agents, from plugins to agents integrated into SDLC processes.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow a distributed team of engineers across Ireland and India, establishing an effective operating rhythm across time zones.
- Define the strategy and roadmap for Toast's internal agent ecosystem, encompassing developer tooling and agents for non-engineering functions.
- Oversee the delivery of internal agent platform components from design to production, including integrations with Toast systems and data.
- Drive adoption of agent tools across R&D and the company by collaborating with product managers on customer research.
- Establish usage guardrails for agents with Security, Legal, and Finance, covering access controls, data handling, and AI spend visibility.
- Define and report key metrics for the team, such as adoption, time saved, quality, and cost per outcome, to leadership.
- Maintain hands-on knowledge of agentic development practices to inform technical decisions and model team workflows.
- Champion AI tools and practices to accelerate development, improve team velocity, and pioneer new building methodologies, setting standards for an AI-first engineering organization.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience managing software engineering teams with a strong software development background.
- Daily hands-on use of coding harnesses (e.g., Claude Code, Codex) and LLM-based tooling.
- Ability to translate fast-moving, ambiguous technology into a clear roadmap and make prioritization decisions with incomplete information.
- Capacity to communicate and influence at director and executive levels, including with non-engineering functions.
- Proven track record of delivering internal platforms or developer tooling with measurable adoption.
- Solid technical foundation in building and operating distributed systems or SaaS products.
- Experience leading distributed teams across multiple countries and time zones.
