Toast is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the architectural design, technical execution, and implementation of AI agents and infrastructure for their FinTech Team area. This critical role involves driving modern architectural patterns, including spec-driven development and agentic workflows, to deliver high-impact software that helps restaurants manage staff and optimize labor. The ideal candidate will be a key technical leader, responsible for defining and executing technical architecture, translating product roadmaps into technical designs, and maintaining a hands-on approach to coding and problem-solving.
Responsibilities
- Define and execute the technical architecture for AI agents within the Team domain, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security.
- Partner with Engineering and Product Managers to translate product roadmaps into technical designs and deliverables.
- Write code, prototype new patterns, and resolve complex technical bottlenecks.
- Collaborate with other Principal Engineers to align on best practices, agent patterns, and spec-driven development.
- Guide and mentor engineers within the Team area to foster technical excellence.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience designing, building, and operating highly scalable, mission-critical distributed systems and SaaS products.
- Proven track record of leading complex technical initiatives and delivering robust software architecture.
- Strong enthusiasm for agentic development practices, LLM integration, and modern software paradigms.
- Ability to design high-level technical solutions and connect to code-level execution and system performance.
- Effective communication skills to articulate complex technical ideas to both technical and product leadership.
