Notion is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer in India to focus on complex data migrations, integrations, and automations for customers across the APAC region. This role is initially internally focused, requiring close collaboration with regional Forward Deployed Engineers who manage customer-facing aspects. You will be responsible for the technical execution, from assessing feasibility and implementing solutions to testing, rolling out to production, and ensuring operational handoff. The position involves working with diverse customer environments and data, demanding strong engineering fundamentals, sound judgment, and the ability to create reusable tools and repeatable processes. As a founding engineer in India, you will play a key role in establishing new regional engineering capabilities, including migration infrastructure, standards, and tooling, with the potential to grow into customer-facing responsibilities or technical leadership.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical execution layer for customer migrations after initial scope and architecture are defined.
- Contribute to feasibility assessments, estimation, implementation planning, and risk identification.
- Apply a repeatable migration lifecycle including source inventory, transformation design, testing, production cutover, and reconciliation.
- Translate customer and FDE requirements into technical designs, implementation plans, test strategies, and runbooks.
- Build production-quality migration utilities, backend services, data pipelines, and automations using Python, SQL, APIs, and cloud infrastructure.
- Investigate source system behavior, data quality issues, and constraints to recommend practical solutions.
- Design and validate permissions, ownership, and inheritance mappings.
- Design migrations for reliability, scale, security, observability, idempotency, and failure recovery.
- Execute migrations following strict security, data-residency, and handling procedures.
- Build validation and reconciliation frameworks to evidence migration completeness and accuracy.
- Debug failures across application code, infrastructure, customer data, and third-party systems.
- Manage multiple implementation workstreams, dependencies, and priorities, communicating progress and risks.
- Surface scope changes, unsupported requirements, and timeline risks early, escalating with options.
- Maintain an auditable record of scope, decisions, risks, approvals, and validation evidence.
- Convert repeated delivery patterns into reusable components, automation, documentation, and playbooks.
- Provide actionable platform feedback and technical requirements to Notion's Product and Engineering teams based on field learnings.
Requirements
- 3 to 6 years of hands-on experience in backend engineering, data engineering, integration engineering, implementation engineering, technical consulting, solutions engineering, or a similar technical role.
- Strong hands-on Python development experience.
- Working experience with Node.js, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
- Strong SQL skills.
- Solid understanding of databases.
