About the job

MongoDB's Application Modernization Platform (AMP) helps organizations modernize legacy applications and move their workloads and associated data from relational databases to MongoDB. The Platform team builds the shared foundations that make AMP a cohesive product by connecting specialized tools and services through consistent interfaces, integrating them with AI agents and development environments, and making them secure, observable, and straightforward to deploy and operate. We are looking for a Staff Engineer to set technical direction and lead delivery of this platform, combining deep systems engineering with product judgment to turn ambiguous requirements into reusable services and working integrations. Your impact will be measured by how reliably teams and customers can adopt and use AMP capabilities, and how much engineering effort the platform removes from their path.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction and lead the delivery of the platform.
  • Define clear boundaries between platform, product teams, and external partners.
  • Make deliberate build-versus-integrate decisions.
  • Contribute foundational code to the platform.
  • Formulate core service layers and integration frameworks.
  • Define strict service-level boundaries with collaborating engineering organizations.
  • Iteratively mature platform primitives using production workloads.
  • Spearhead engineering initiatives to expose platform capabilities via resilient CLI tools and APIs.
  • Connect platform capabilities cleanly with autonomous agent frameworks.
  • Manage tenant isolation, auth state, and operational context.
  • Optimize distribution, automated upgrades, and runtime execution across client enterprise environments.
  • Establish holistic telemetry, structured logging, and actionable diagnostics.
  • Work closely alongside security engineers to safeguard customer intellectual property.
  • Ensure robust execution isolation and embed security controls into release pipelines.
  • Align product management, field teams, and external technical partners.
  • Translate user demands into high-impact roadmaps.
  • Drive implementation from discovery through widespread client adoption.
  • Author core infrastructure components.
  • Lead rigorous architectural reviews.
  • Elevate team capabilities through shared design paradigms, documentation, and mentoring.

Requirements

  • Over 8 years in software engineering and production operations.
  • Proven history of championing major technical strategies and deploying resilient, scalable architectures.
  • Deep practical expertise architecting common frameworks, distributed architectures, or core developer tooling.
  • Track record of establishing and refining service boundaries, interfaces, and data schemas with a focus on backward compatibility, extensibility, and smooth adoption.
  • Practical expertise maintaining mission-critical services, driving observability, incident recovery, performance tuning, automated test suites, and continuous delivery workflows.
  • Demonstrated success constructing safe integrations and implementing strict auth mechanisms.
  • Ability to spearhead architectural direction across team boundaries.
  • Communicate complex tradeoffs.
  • Offer constructive guidance and mentor engineers.
  • Sharp product judgment that converts developer requirements and user feedback into clear roadmaps, tangible milestones, and clear success criteria.
  • Hands-on experience embedding intelligent agents or language model workflows into enterprise platforms (beneficial).
  • Expertise delivering developer-centric software (beneficial).
  • In-depth background in application modernization, relational database systems, MongoDB ecosystems, automated code transformation, and enterprise data migration pipelines (beneficial).
