MongoDB is forming a new engineering team focused on becoming the go-to data platform for developers building with AI frameworks like LangChain, LlamaIndex, and n8n. As the founding Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for hiring the team, defining the technical direction, and shipping integrations into fast-moving open-source ecosystems. This role requires a blend of hands-on technical exploration and team leadership, ensuring the long-term health of a growing integration portfolio. You will collaborate closely with product, partners, field teams, the developer community, and open-source maintainers to deliver impactful solutions and strengthen MongoDB's future in AI.
Responsibilities
- Hire and lead a team of Python and TypeScript engineers to build and own MongoDB integrations across AI frameworks.
- Execute effectively in a fast-moving environment, delivering quickly while maintaining high technical quality.
- Proactively identify and flag issues, concerns, and resource needs, working with management to resolve them.
- Collaborate with product, program management, sales, GTM, and peer engineering teams to define and deliver capabilities.
- Manage dependencies on drivers, platform capabilities, and other MongoDB product surfaces for framework integrations.
- Collaborate with external open-source project maintainers to ensure high-quality upstream contributions.
- Conduct initial exploratory work, guide key technical decisions, and unblock the team.
- Own the monitoring, operations, maintenance, and ongoing quality of the integration portfolio.
- Develop and implement testing strategies, release readiness plans, and operational follow-through.
- Foster sustainable engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, and version compatibility.
- Keep the team current with Python, TypeScript, and broader AI builder ecosystems, including frameworks and emerging patterns.
- Utilize a research and discovery mindset to guide roadmap and investment decisions based on market signals.
- Identify emerging opportunities in the AI ecosystem and advocate for strategic early investments.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience building developer platforms, libraries, or high-scale technical systems.
- Strong proficiency in Python or TypeScript, with the ability to lead teams working across both ecosystems.
- 3+ years of experience managing a software engineering team and providing technical leadership for complex projects.
- Experience with query optimization (especially MongoDB) and AI coding tools.
- Demonstrated success in hiring, mentoring, and growing high-performing engineering teams.
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving technical landscape with frequent context switching and incomplete information.
- Strong technical depth in developer-facing software and the judgment to make architectural trade-offs.
- Experience leading the launch and production operation of new features or systems.
- Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills.
- Comfort operating in ambiguous, evolving spaces and guiding teams through uncertainty.
- Strong interest in modern AI builder workflows and developer tooling, with familiarity across retrieval patterns, agent workflows, embedding, and vector search.
