About the job
LanceDB is seeking a Senior Documentation Engineer to enhance the understanding, adoption, and production use of their AI-native Multimodal Lakehouse. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, technical writing, and developer experience, focusing on translating complex data infrastructure concepts into clear explanations and practical examples. You will collaborate with engineering, product, and the open-source community to document new features, create runnable examples, and ensure guidance remains accurate as the product evolves. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape how documentation supports the growing ecosystem of AI-assisted development and significantly influence how developers and AI agents learn and build with LanceDB.
Responsibilities
- Create and maintain quickstarts, tutorials, conceptual guides, API references, and troubleshooting documentation for Lance and LanceDB.
- Design documentation specifically for AI agents, including structured API descriptions, prerequisites, examples, and error guidance, and evaluate its effectiveness through agent-driven tasks.
- Build runnable examples and sample applications demonstrating data ingestion, vector search, filtering, indexing, and multimodal data management.
- Utilize AI coding assistants and other AI tools for code research, content drafting and revision, example generation, and maintenance automation, verifying outputs against product behavior.
- Maintain documentation tooling and automate checks for code examples, API references, links, and content quality.
- Partner with engineering and product teams to document new features alongside releases and keep existing guidance aligned with product changes.
- Develop and continuously improve documentation structure, navigation, and search functionality.
- Identify documentation gaps and prioritize improvements based on community questions, support feedback, and usage data.
- Represent LanceDB within the open-source community by reviewing documentation changes and establishing contribution guidelines.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in documentation engineering, developer-focused technical writing, software engineering, or a related field.
- A portfolio demonstrating the ability to clearly explain complex technical concepts and help developers complete tasks.
- Experience designing documentation for AI agents, understanding how content structure and API clarity impact agent performance.
- Fluency with AI tooling, including coding assistants and LLM-based workflows, with sound judgment for validating outputs.
- Strong Python skills, including the ability to write, run, and debug examples using APIs and SDKs.
- Familiarity with databases, SQL, and data workflows, with an interest in vector search and multimodal AI infrastructure.
- Experience with Git, pull requests, Markdown, and documentation workflows integrated with software development.
- Demonstrated ability to learn a product by reading code, experimenting with APIs, and collaborating with engineers.
- Strong editorial judgment, attention to technical accuracy, and the ability to prioritize and work independently.
