About the job
Klaviyo is seeking a Staff Engineer to join the Customer Agent team, a new and ambitious group focused on building a conversational AI system for brands to serve their customers at scale. This role is based in Boston and requires an in-office presence. You will be instrumental in setting the technical and product direction for a core area of the Customer Agent product, taking ownership of complex, ambiguous problems from conception to production. The team operates with the speed and ownership of a startup, backed by the resources of a leading tech company, and emphasizes shipping production-ready AI systems that make real judgment calls. You will be hands-on, contributing to architecture, writing code, and mentoring other engineers through design reviews, while partnering with product, design, and data science leaders to shape the future of the platform.
Responsibilities
- Set technical and product direction for a core area of Customer Agent, from architecture through production.
- Address complex technical challenges in orchestration, evaluation, guardrails, memory, context, and failure handling for non-deterministic systems.
- Write and ship code, review designs, and make critical decisions in your area of ownership.
- Define and implement patterns for other engineers to adopt.
- Mentor engineers through design reviews.
- Collaborate with product, design, data science, and go-to-market leaders to define product strategy.
- Evaluate and integrate emerging AI technologies into production systems.
Requirements
- Proven experience building, scaling, and supporting production agentic systems, including orchestration, evaluations, guardrails, and failure handling.
- Experience owning a significant technical and product area, with a track record of shipped designs that others have built upon.
- Hands-on coding, architecture review, and debugging of production issues.
- Ability to mentor and unblock other engineers through design patterns and reusable solutions.
- Clear communication of complex technical trade-offs to both engineering and product audiences.
- Ability to translate undefined problems into actionable plans.
- Experience with multi-tenant agent platforms at production scale is a plus.
- Experience building 0-to-1 products or working in startup environments is a plus.
- Track record with production evaluation systems, AI observability, or human-in-the-loop workflows is a plus.
Benefits
- Participation in the company’s annual cash bonus plan.
- Equity.
- Sign-on payments.
- Comprehensive health, welfare, and wellbeing benefits.
- Potential for up to 10% travel.
