About the job

Klaviyo is seeking a Senior Staff Engineer to join the Customer Agent team in Boston. This team is building a cutting-edge conversational AI system designed to enable brands to serve their customers at an unprecedented scale. As a key member, you will be instrumental in shaping the technical and product direction of this 0-to-1 agentic product, operating with the agility of a startup within a large, innovative tech company. This role is for a principal-caliber individual contributor who has a proven track record of architecting, building, and scaling production agentic systems beyond the demo phase, acting as a force multiplier for the organization through strong technical judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical and product direction for the Customer Agent's core platform, from architecture to production.
  • Address the platform's most challenging technical problems, including orchestration, evaluation, guardrails, memory, context, self-healing, and failure handling for non-deterministic systems.
  • Write and ship code, review designs, and make critical technical decisions.
  • Develop architecture and frameworks that are adopted by other engineers and teams.
  • Mentor engineers through design reviews.
  • Collaborate with product, design, data science, and go-to-market leaders to shape the product roadmap.
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging AI technologies into production.

Requirements

  • Proven experience architecting, building, scaling, and supporting a production agentic system end-to-end, including orchestration, evaluations, guardrails, and failure handling.
  • Experience managing agent systems in production, including security against misuse and ensuring reliability of non-deterministic systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to set technical and product direction for an entire product area, with a history of shipping impactful designs that others build upon.
  • Maintained hands-on coding and debugging skills throughout career, tackling complex problems directly.
  • Experience creating reusable architectures and frameworks that unblock multiple teams.
  • Strong communication skills to articulate complex technical trade-offs to diverse audiences and translate undefined problems into actionable plans.
  • Experience running a multi-tenant agent platform at production scale (nice to have).
  • Experience building 0-to-1 products or working in startup environments (nice to have).
  • Track record with production evaluation systems, AI observability, or human-in-the-loop workflows for LLM-powered products (nice to have).

Benefits

  • Participation in the company’s annual cash bonus plan
  • Equity
  • Sign-on payments
  • Comprehensive health, welfare, and wellbeing benefits
