About the job

JPMorgan Chase is leveraging AI to transform its global operations, with a significant annual investment in technology and innovation. The Machine Learning Center of Excellence (MLCOE), within the Chief Data & Analytics Office (CDAO), develops and implements AI and machine learning solutions to address complex business challenges and enhance financial products, productivity, and risk management. As a Summer Associate, you will apply advanced LLM and agentic AI methods to problems in areas like natural language processing, question answering, and reinforcement learning. You will own a research project from inception to completion, collaborating with mentors and business experts, gaining hands-on experience with real-world business problems at scale, and potentially contributing to published research or product pipelines. The program begins in June and offers mentorship, speaker series, and potential for full-time employment within a hybrid work model.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, model development, and evaluation on structured and unstructured datasets.
  • Design and prototype agentic AI systems, including multi-step workflows that utilize tools and perform reasoning across tasks.
  • Implement and experiment with LLM techniques like retrieval-augmented generation, tool/function calling, fine-tuning, and agent harness design.
  • Develop evaluation frameworks to assess the quality, reliability, and safety of LLM and agent outputs.
  • Collaborate with mentors, stakeholders, and engineers to translate business problems into AI solutions and facilitate their progression towards production.
  • Document methodologies, assumptions, and results for reproducibility, and present findings to technical and business audiences.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD or MS program in a quantitative field (e.g., Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Operations Research, Data Science) with an expected graduation between December 2027 and August 2028.
  • Solid background in at least one of: large language models and agentic AI, natural language processing, speech recognition, or personalization/recommendation, with familiarity with current state-of-the-art methods.
  • Strong foundation in statistics, probability, and machine learning, including experimental design and metric definition aligned with business goals.
  • Hands-on experience with modern LLM application patterns such as prompting, embeddings, retrieval-augmented generation, tool/function calling, structured outputs, and multi-step or agentic workflows.
  • Proficient Python skills, including deep learning frameworks (PyTorch or TensorFlow), the Hugging Face ecosystem, and core data libraries (NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn).
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for both technical and business audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Benefits

  • Potential for full-time employment offers upon successful completion of the program.
  • Mentorship from experienced AI researchers and engineers.
  • Engaging speaker series with senior leaders.
  • Project work with direct impact on JPMorgan's businesses.
