Indicium AI is seeking an experienced Principal Forward Deployed AI Engineer to scale their impact and provide technical authority across multiple areas. This is a hands-on engineering role with broader technical, people, and commercial responsibilities. You will be deeply involved in the codebase, tackling complex challenges and acting as the primary technical voice. Your role will involve guiding delivery squads, managing commercial aspects of projects, and evolving into a trusted partner who shapes client roadmaps. You will also contribute to growing Indicium AI by developing reference architectures, agent patterns, and accelerators, assisting with hiring and talent development, and supporting pre-sales and client acquisition efforts.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical direction and architecture of complex or multiple concurrent AI engagements, ensuring production readiness.
- Set architectural patterns for large-scale agentic systems, including state, memory, failure modes, and recovery.
- Design and build production agentic AI systems, encompassing multi-agent orchestration, autonomous workflows, tool-use, and reliability layers.
- Build advanced RAG pipelines, including retrieval architectures, embedding strategies, reranking, hybrid search, and evaluation frameworks.
- Develop and deploy MCP servers and tool ecosystem integrations for agent capabilities within enterprise infrastructure.
- Design evaluation and observability frameworks for non-deterministic AI systems to ensure measurability and continuous improvement.
- Deliver workstreams through Lead and Senior FDEs, providing reviews and course corrections.
- Ensure delivery quality across engagements, including outcomes, timelines, and commercial health (scope, burn, margin).
- Manage senior client stakeholders and act as a trusted advisor to client technology leadership, shaping roadmaps.
- Influence wins through pre-sales activities, technical viewpoints, proposal shaping, and partner relationships.
- Develop Senior and Lead FDEs through coaching and L&D initiatives.
- Create intellectual property, accelerators, and reference architectures to improve engagement efficiency.
- Contribute to the growth of Indicium AI through internal initiatives.
- Collaborate with Anthropic field teams on joint client engagements and represent Indicium AI.
- Take AI systems from ambiguous problems to production deployment, including agentic systems, retrieval architectures, and evaluation frameworks within organizational constraints.
- Lead delivery teams by planning, sequencing, unblocking, and communicating project status.
- Act as the technical representative for projects, including during challenging periods.
- Grow other engineers through deliberate mentoring, coaching, or review.
- Navigate complexities of large organizations, including security reviews, compliance, legacy systems, and multi-team dynamics.
Requirements
- Proven experience taking AI systems from ambiguous problems to production deployment, including agentic systems, retrieval architectures, and evaluation frameworks within real-world constraints.
- Experience owning the technical direction of a project or workstream, making architectural decisions, and being accountable for them.
- Hands-on experience writing production code, not just reviewing it.
- Experience leading a delivery team, including planning, sequencing, unblocking, and providing clear communication.
- Experience acting as the technical face of a piece of work, including during difficult situations.
- Experience growing other engineers through mentoring, coaching, or review.
- Experience navigating large organizations, including security reviews, compliance, legacy systems, and managing teams with diverse incentives.
