About the job

We are seeking a Backend Product Engineer to own and scale the systems that make Granola fast, accurate, and trustworthy for a rapidly growing user base. This role involves not only building robust backend systems but also engaging directly with users to understand their needs and contribute to product direction. You will work on critical components like the voice pipeline, integrating new AI models, developing the agent harness, extending APIs and integrations, ensuring enterprise-grade security and data isolation, and managing data at scale with Postgres. We value engineers who have a strong product sense, can articulate trade-offs in system design, and are comfortable working with cloud infrastructure and modern backend technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Scale real-time transcription for accurate and fast note delivery.
  • Evaluate and integrate new voice and transcription models into production.
  • Build the agent harness for long-running jobs, tool calls, retries, and context retrieval.
  • Extend APIs and integrations for seamless use with existing AI tools.
  • Develop permissions, data isolation, and admin controls for enterprise clients.
  • Manage and optimize Postgres performance, observability, and alerting.
  • Own backend systems in production and discuss design trade-offs.
  • Collaborate with users to identify and implement product improvements.

Requirements

  • Experience owning backend systems in production.
  • Proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js.
  • Deep understanding of relational databases, including query plans, indexing, and zero-downtime migrations.
  • Comfort with cloud infrastructure as code (AWS, Terraform, Lambda).
  • Consideration for security and failure modes in system design.
  • Strong product sense and ability to connect system functionality to user needs.
  • Experience with speech or audio pipelines (bonus).
  • Experience with LLM infrastructure (bonus).
  • Experience with evals (bonus).
  • Experience with streaming systems (bonus).

Benefits

  • Salary slightly above market.
  • Above market equity.
  • Relocation support for London.
