About the job
Elastic, the Search AI Company, is seeking a Senior Java Developer to join their Elasticsearch team and contribute to the Inference API. This API acts as a crucial integration layer between Elasticsearch and various machine learning services, including Elastic's own offerings and third-party providers like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. The role involves maintaining and developing the plugin framework and REST API, with responsibilities spanning protocol design, streaming, asynchronous execution, and billing integration. You will collaborate closely with the wider inference team and the Kibana team to enhance features such as semantic search, reranking, and generative AI across Elastic Cloud and hosted environments.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain integrations with internal systems and external inference providers, including schema negotiation, streaming (SSE), and error normalization.
- Contribute to the inference plugin's internal architecture, focusing on task settings, chunking strategies, rate limiting, and provider-level configuration.
- Review open-source contributions and collaborate with third-party engineers to ensure adherence to technology standards.
- Participate in an on-call rotation for inference-related incidents.
- Write comprehensive tests, including unit tests, REST integration tests, and rolling-upgrade tests.
Requirements
- 5+ years of production Java experience, with a history of contributing to large, established Java codebases.
- Proficiency in core Java, including the standard library of data structures, concurrency constructs, and newer language features.
- Experience crafting ergonomic APIs and understanding the trade-offs involved.
- Experience with low-level Java concepts such as concurrency, parallelism, and classloaders.
- Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across functions and teams, and transition between projects and codebases as needed.
- Capacity to work autonomously, drive decisions, and achieve results in a distributed team environment through asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication.
Benefits
- Competitive pay based on the work performed.
- Health coverage for employees and their families in many locations.
- Flexible work locations and schedules.
- Generous number of vacation days annually.
- Company match for financial donations and service up to $2000 (or local currency equivalent).
- Up to 40 hours per year for volunteer projects.
- Minimum of 16 weeks of parental leave.
