About the job
The Behavior AI team is responsible for developing the AI-based anomaly detection systems that power Datadog's security products. These models are designed to learn normal behavior patterns from vast amounts of data and flag deviations in real-time, with a focus on efficiency and cost-effectiveness at scale. The work involves creating small, custom models optimized for high-throughput stream processing, rather than relying on large, general-purpose models. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the entire model lifecycle, from architectural design and large-scale training to optimization for production environments, addressing complex challenges in model efficiency, accuracy trade-offs, and interpretability.
Responsibilities
- Design and build custom mid-size models for high-throughput stream processing and train them at scale.
- Optimize models by reformulating mathematics to better fit hardware and software constraints.
- Build training data pipelines from raw streams to training-ready datasets.
- Collaborate with engineering to integrate models into production, focusing on GPU utilization, latency, and cost.
- Plan roadmaps for model and system improvements based on product understanding.
- Develop an agentic layer to analyze, validate, and act on model outputs.
- Create lightweight interpretability tools to explain model behavior.
- Maintain and monitor owned models, services, and infrastructure, participating in on-call rotations.
Requirements
- BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Hands-on experience training, fine-tuning, and deploying models at scale into production systems with throughput and cost constraints.
- Working knowledge of GPU functionality and a track record of optimizing model efficiency on real hardware.
- Strong applied mathematics fundamentals applied to model design and optimization.
- Passion for applied mathematics, software design, and implementation.
- Ability to build data pipelines and production code alongside models.
- Skill in clearly explaining complex ideas and trade-offs to engineers and product partners.
- Experience with efficient sequence architectures, model interpretability, or large-scale streaming systems is a bonus.
Benefits
- New hire stock equity (RSUs)
- Employee stock purchase plan (ESPP)
- Continuous professional development, product training, and career pathing
- Opportunity to attend and present at conferences and meetups
- Opportunity to publish work
- Intra-departmental mentor and buddy program
- Inclusive company culture
- Ability to join Community Guilds (Datadog employee resource groups)
- Competitive global benefits
