Capital One is seeking a Director of AI Engineering to lead the development of responsible and reliable AI systems that are transforming the banking industry. This role is central to the Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team, which empowers other teams with Generative AI models and platforms. You will oversee the design, development, and deployment of AI software components, including foundation model training, LLM inference, and model evaluation. The position involves making critical build-vs-buy decisions for AI technologies and contributing to the technical vision and roadmap for foundational AI systems. You will also be responsible for attracting and retaining top AI talent and fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
Responsibilities
- Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products.
- Oversee the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of AI software components.
- Make build-vs-buy decisions for Open Source and SaaS AI technologies.
- Invent and introduce state-of-the-art LLM optimization techniques.
- Contribute to the technical vision and long-term roadmap of foundational AI systems.
- Attract and retain top talent in the AI industry and nurture team development.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field.
- At least 3 years of people leadership experience.
- At least 6 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies.
- At least 6 years of experience deploying scalable and responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure).
- Master's or Doctoral Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or related field (preferred).
- 5+ years of experience managing and leading an engineering team (preferred).
- 8+ years of experience deploying scalable and responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms (preferred).
- 8+ years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies, such as LLM Inference, Similarity Search and VectorDBs, Guardrails, and Memory (preferred).
- Passion for staying abreast of the latest AI research and applying novel techniques in production (preferred).
- Excellent communication and presentation skills (preferred).
