Capital One is seeking an Applied Researcher to join the AI Foundations team, focusing on LLM Core and Agentic AI. This role involves creating trustworthy and reliable AI systems that enhance customer experiences in banking. You will partner with data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered products, leveraging technologies like PyTorch and Hugging Face. The position requires building AI foundation models through all development phases, from design to implementation, and engaging in applied research to push the boundaries of AI for customer-facing applications. You will translate complex technical work into tangible business goals and lead research initiatives that bridge model development with production deployment.
Responsibilities
- Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products.
- Leverage a broad stack of technologies to analyze large volumes of data.
- Build AI foundation models through all phases of development.
- Engage in high-impact applied research to advance customer experiences.
- Translate complex work into tangible business goals.
- Lead research threads bridging prototype development and deployment.
Requirements
- Experience building large deep learning models (language, images, events, or graphs).
- Expertise in training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, explainability, or RLHF.
- Engineering mindset with a track record of delivering models at scale.
- Experience delivering libraries, platform code, or solution code to existing products.
- Track record of high-quality ideas or improvements in machine learning, demonstrated by publications or projects.
- Ability to own and pursue a research agenda autonomously.
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields, or MS with equivalent experience.
- Experience in Applied Research.
- Familiarity with open-source languages and tools.
- Hands-on experience developing AI foundation models using open-source tools and cloud platforms.
- Deep understanding of AI methodologies.
- Experience with LLMs.
- PhD focus on NLP or Masters with 5 years of industrial NLP research experience.
- Experience with optimization for training and inference.
- Experience with fine-tuning LLMs.
- Knowledge of transfer learning principles.
