About the job

Commure is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their team in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to help build and scale their RCM Email Agents. These agents are designed to understand, process, and act upon the high volume of operational emails faced by healthcare revenue cycle teams, automating tasks like claim and payment inquiries, enrollment, and customer support. The role involves owning these systems end-to-end, from agent harnesses and backend APIs to data models, operator interfaces, evaluations, and production infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with engineers and RCM operators to transform complex workflows into reliable, scalable agents, working across the full stack to deliver production outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate production AI agents for high-volume RCM email workflows.
  • Develop agent harnesses supporting tool use, structured workflows, context management, human escalation, and reliable execution.
  • Build scalable backend services and APIs using Python and FastAPI.
  • Create React and JavaScript interfaces for operations teams to manage agent activity.
  • Design PostgreSQL schemas and data pipelines for workflow state, auditability, analytics, and agent performance.
  • Integrate agents with email systems, internal services, healthcare workflows, and third-party platforms.
  • Build evaluation frameworks to measure agent accuracy, resolution rate, escalation rate, latency, and cost.
  • Establish monitoring, alerting, reporting, and safeguards for business-critical agent workflows.
  • Investigate production failures and improve system reliability.
  • Collaborate with RCM operators and customers to understand workflows and implement feedback.
  • Own projects from problem definition through implementation, deployment, and production impact.
  • Contribute to establishing a strong engineering culture.

Requirements

  • Professional experience building and operating production software systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and experience with FastAPI for API and service development.
  • Strong full-stack development skills with experience in React and JavaScript or TypeScript.
  • Experience designing data models and production systems with PostgreSQL.
  • Hands-on experience building with LLMs, AI agents, or agent harnesses, including concepts like tool calling, orchestration, context management, evaluations, retries, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
  • Strong understanding of production engineering, including testing, observability, alerting, incident response, and system reliability.
  • Experience with containers and cloud infrastructure (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Ability to move quickly while maintaining high standards for correctness, maintainability, and user experience.
  • Strong product judgment and ability to simplify complex operational workflows.
  • Excellent ownership and communication skills, with ability to work with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Builder mindset and excitement for applying AI to healthcare problems.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
