About the job
Artefact is seeking a Senior AI & Agentic Engineer to join their team in Montréal. This role focuses on taking AI features from concept to production, involving the design and development of interfaces, services, and agentic systems for client projects. You will be responsible for building conversational applications, automating business workflows with multi-step agents, and managing the associated retrieval and data pipelines. The position requires end-to-end ownership of components, including front-end development, backend services, RAG pipelines, and evaluation processes, with a strong emphasis on production-grade AI systems.
Responsibilities
- Build AI products across the full stack, from interface to infrastructure.
- Develop user-facing interfaces in TypeScript/React and backend services/APIs in Python or Node.
- Implement agentic behavior, including orchestration, tool/function calling, memory, and guardrails.
- Build retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, covering ingestion, chunking, embeddings, and vector/hybrid search.
- Connect AI systems to enterprise data and applications using APIs, semantic layers, and protocols like MCP.
- Write evaluation suites and regression tests for LLM-powered features.
- Monitor cost, latency, and quality of AI systems in production.
- Apply solid engineering practices such as version control, code review, automated testing, CI/CD, and observability.
- Deploy AI systems on cloud infrastructure (GCP, Azure, or AWS) using containers, serverless, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Build and maintain data pipelines for AI systems across warehouses, lakehouses, and vector stores.
- Utilize agentic coding tools for development.
- Communicate progress, trade-offs, and blockers clearly to clients and project leads.
- Support pre-sales activities, including scoping solutions, building demos, and estimating effort.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal accelerators, reusable components, and engineering standards.
Requirements
- 3–5 years of experience in software engineering or data engineering.
- Extensive hands-on use of AI tools and LLM-based development over the past year.
- Professional English proficiency.
- Strong programming skills in Python and TypeScript/JavaScript.
- Experience building and consuming APIs.
- Experience with front-end development (React or similar) and at least one backend framework.
- Hands-on experience with RAG, embeddings, and vector search.
- Experience with at least one agentic framework (LangGraph/LangChain, Google ADK, Claude Agent SDK, or OpenAI Agents SDK).
- Specialization in at least one major AI platform ecosystem (Google, Anthropic, or OpenAI).
- Working experience with one cloud platform (GCP, Azure, or AWS).
- Fluency with agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Codex, Cursor).
- Experience building and maintaining data pipelines.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Obtain a relevant AI platform or cloud certification within the first 2 months if not already held (company sponsors exam and provides preparation time).
Benefits
- Company sponsors AI platform or cloud certification exam.
- Company provides time to prepare for certification.
