About the job
Abnormal's AI-native security products protect enterprises from cybercrime by securing critical communications, identities, and infrastructure. This role on the ADEX Team focuses on owning detection features end-to-end, from ideation and design to implementation, launch, and continuous improvement. You will collaborate with engineers, product managers, and data scientists to build reliable, scalable, and AI-native detection systems, specifically targeting impersonation attacks like brand, lookalike-domain, VIP, and employee impersonation. The ideal candidate is an engineer who has shipped production systems, desires greater ownership, and is eager to leverage AI for novel detection solutions.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate core detection features from initial concept through ongoing maintenance.
- Own detection projects end-to-end, including scoping ambiguous problems, identifying risks, and delivering reliably.
- Analyze missed attacks to understand underlying patterns and translate them into detection enhancements or new systems.
- Write and tune detection logic, add new signals, and minimize false positives.
- Build and evaluate LLM-based detection agents, rigorously measuring precision and recall.
- Surface detections as reusable intelligence for other teams and products.
- Participate in on-call rotations, debug customer escalations, and feed learnings back into system design and operations.
- Leverage AI in the development loop for code, tests, data analysis, experiments, and documentation.
- Contribute to team health through documentation, knowledge sharing, and providing thoughtful feedback in reviews.
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of shipping and operating production systems.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, system design, testing, debugging, and writing maintainable code.
- Strong Python proficiency and ability to learn new languages and frameworks.
- Solid data analysis skills, including SQL and experience reasoning over large datasets.
- A detection or adversarial mindset, enjoying thinking like an attacker.
- Genuine fluency with AI-native development, including using AI coding agents and building LLM-powered detection.
- Demonstrated ability to own projects with initial ambiguity, clarify requirements, make tradeoffs, and deliver on time.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly for remote, distributed teams.
- Strong growth mindset and sense of ownership.
Benefits
- Solve hard, meaningful problems at the intersection of AI, security, and large-scale detection.
- Work where your contributions directly map to attacks caught and customers protected.
