Vapi is building Voice AI that resolves, not transfers, powering billions of calls for major companies and trusted by millions of developers. As our enterprise ARR has grown significantly, we are hiring a Member of Technical Staff, Forward Deployed to focus on unowned roadmap work and platform development. Unlike a traditional solutions engineer, this role involves shipping code directly into customer repositories, Vapi's GitOps configurations, and the Vapi platform itself. You will be building real-time, latency-sensitive systems that orchestrate multiple providers like speech-to-text, LLMs, text-to-speech, and telephony at enterprise scale, owning these complex systems end-to-end.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end deployment engagements for enterprise customers, from scoping to go-live and handoff.
- Build production-ready Vapi deployments, including assistants, squads, tools, structured outputs, telephony/SIP, webhooks, and integrations.
- Debug live production issues by analyzing call records, app logs, provider requests/responses, and infrastructure metrics.
- Own customer-facing GitOps repositories and dedicated cluster configurations.
- Manage technical and executive stakeholders across both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Develop platform improvements to reduce deployment toil, such as outbound campaigns, evaluations, simulations, observability tools, and CLI/MCP tooling.
- Provide insights from deployments back into the product roadmap.
Requirements
- Experience in a technical role at an early-stage startup, understanding of building without a playbook.
- Previous experience as an FDE, Solutions Architect, or Solutions Engineer.
- Proven ability to proactively drive process change.
- Comfort operating in ambiguity and creating structure through action.
- A strong bias toward action: identifying gaps and fixing them.
- 5+ years of professional engineering experience.
- Strong generalist skills across UI/UX, API design, data modeling, and systems architecture.
- Experience in a scrappy, resource-constrained startup environment.
- Clear communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Conceptual understanding of working with AI in production.
- Experience building your own startup or iterating on personal projects is a bonus.
- Shipped at least one product with real users (1,000+ active users, generating revenue, or critical to company operations).
- 1+ year as a founding or early engineer (first 10) at a startup that raised Series A or beyond.
