The Personal AGI team is responsible for training and improving pre-trained models for deployment in ChatGPT, the API, and future products. Within the Model Experience team, we focus on shaping the default character and behavior of ChatGPT, influencing how the model communicates, responds to users, utilizes its capabilities, and behaves across various contexts and languages. Our objective is to ensure every interaction with ChatGPT is thoughtful, helpful, and trustworthy. We establish an opinionated vision for effective human-AI interaction and translate it into tangible model behavior through human data, evaluations, reward models, and post-training. This role operates at the intersection of research, product, and model design, requiring close collaboration with teams across OpenAI to conduct research and ensure our models are safe and reliable for millions of users.
Responsibilities
- Own and pursue a research agenda to improve model capability and performance.
- Collaborate with research and product teams to enable customers to optimize their models.
- Build robust evaluations for tracking modeling improvements.
- Design, implement, test, and debug code across the research stack.
Requirements
- Strong ML engineering skills and research experience, particularly with novel and highly capable models.
- Passion for product-driven research and the quality of human-AI interaction.
- Deep understanding of machine learning and its applications.
- Good judgment about model behavior and the ability to communicate it effectively.
- Ability to translate ambitious, qualitative problems into concrete training interventions.
- Working knowledge of relevant models and building evaluations for model capability improvement.
- Comfortable debugging within a large ML codebase.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic, technically complex, and collaborative environment.
