About the job
Notion is seeking an Early Career AI Engineer to join their team and contribute to shaping the company's AI vision. This role involves working on cutting-edge AI-powered features, leveraging technologies like LLMs and embeddings to enhance Notion's intelligence and capabilities. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to build and ship AI-powered product improvements, own productionization projects, and contribute to evaluation and iteration loops. This is an opportunity to take ownership of meaningful challenges, make critical technical decisions, and contribute to the future of how people work.
Responsibilities
- Partner with the team to prototype and ship AI-powered product improvements.
- Own a scoped productionization project, such as integrating a new model/technique, adding monitoring, or improving performance.
- Contribute to evaluation and iteration loops by building evaluation sets, running experiments, analyzing results, and translating learnings into changes.
- Build model-powered features end-to-end, including UX, APIs, retrieval, orchestration, quality, and reliability.
- Improve model integration and performance, focusing on latency, cost, safety, and robustness.
- Build the infrastructure that supports model serving and experimentation.
- Create evaluation frameworks and automated/human-in-the-loop testing to measure and improve model and product quality.
Requirements
- Less than two years of engineering experience.
- Solid fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems.
- Customer-minded, pragmatic approach to solving problems.
- Experience building and prototyping, with exploration in AI/ML through coursework, projects, internships, or hackathons.
- Comfort learning how different product parts fit together (UI, APIs, data).
- Familiarity with relational databases like Postgres or MySQL.
- Ability to take an idea from prototype to a working feature with guidance.
- Holistic problem-solving approach, understanding context and implications.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and decompose complex problems into clean solutions.
- Balancing business impact with technical solutions.
- Viewing technologies as tools to achieve user impact.
- Staying current with AI-assisted development environments like Cursor and Claude Code.
- Pragmatic tool selection focused on user and business value.
- Proactive communication about progress and blockers.
- High agency and initiative in identifying and driving projects forward.
- Asking questions when needed while independently finding solutions.
