About the job

Modal is seeking the first Account Managers to join their team, reporting to the Regional Director of Account Management. This is a foundational role where you will build the account management function from the ground up, with no existing playbook or territory map. You will own a book of business from day one, managing relationships with fast-moving AI startups to large enterprise teams. This is a commercial role with a revenue target, measured on retention and expansion. While not directly involved in technical recommendations or implementation, the role is inherently technical, requiring you to confidently discuss GPU workloads, inference, and batch jobs with engineers and hold your own in conversations with CxOs down to developers.

Responsibilities

  • Build and iterate on Modal's account management function as the business scales.
  • Own and deliver on a revenue target across your assigned book of accounts.
  • Drive account growth from initial use cases to broader platform standardization.
  • Develop sufficient fluency in Modal to engage with engineering teams on their workloads and identify when to involve FDEs, Support, or Product.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Solutions Architects, FDEs, Support, and Product to grow accounts and provide customer feedback for the roadmap.
  • Travel to customers as needed to support key accounts and pursue expansion opportunities.

Requirements

  • Customer-facing experience with ownership or support of a revenue target in a highly technical, consumption-based business.
  • Technical depth to work autonomously with developers through CxOs and understand core developer tech stack components.
  • Experience building with AI tools, not just consuming pre-built workflows.
  • Strong ownership, organization, and proactive approach to managing your book of business and projects.
  • High learning velocity and a mindset of immediate action and iteration.
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills with a low ego and high accountability.
  • Experience as a Technical Account Manager, Solutions Engineer, or similar role is a plus.
  • Engineering certification (e.g., Computer Science Degree, Professional Bootcamps) is a plus.
  • Experience as an early Go-To-Market hire at a fast-growing startup is a plus.
  • Familiarity with GPU spend, model training, or inference workloads is a plus.
