Harvey is transforming legal and professional services by combining frontier agentic AI, an enterprise-grade platform, and deep domain expertise. We are seeking a Staff or Senior Staff Software Engineer to join our Product Engineering team. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead engineering projects across multiple product lines, working closely with AI, Legal, and Go-to-Market teams to build secure, value-driven customer systems. You will contribute to both the user-facing applications and the underlying agentic capabilities that power our genAI products, shaping the future of application layer and generative AI solutions.
Responsibilities
- Build and integrate AI across various customer touchpoints including web, desktop, mobile, and embedded experiences (Google Docs, MS Word, Outlook, Slack), and APIs.
- Lead significant, high-priority projects that involve multiple teams and define future technical strategies.
- Identify critical business problems, prioritize effectively, and make key tradeoff decisions to maintain development velocity.
- Develop AI-platform and AI-native capabilities such as agent harnesses, agent building, tool calling, retrieval, memory management, personalization, and evaluation frameworks.
- Ship systems for large-scale document retrieval (petabyte-scale), rapid ingestion growth, data collection across diverse jurisdictions, and robust security for sensitive information.
- Develop across the full stack, including React, TypeScript, Python, and Postgres, architecting intuitive user experiences and robust APIs for streaming results, long-running processes, and complex tool-calling workflows.
- Mentor senior and staff engineers and elevate the engineering standards across the organization.
Requirements
- 10+ years of post-BS/MS experience in a product-focused software engineering role at the Staff level or above.
- Deep expertise in full stack, backend, or agents/AI, with broad applicability across other domains.
- Proven experience building scalable, extensible systems that support multiple product lines.
- Track record of shipping highly intuitive products in fast-growing SaaS environments with strong attention to detail.
- Proficiency in React, TypeScript, CSS (TailwindCSS), Python, or related technologies.
- For agents/AI roles: proficiency in Python and hands-on experience building and shipping agentic systems (agent harnesses/loops, tool use, memory, evals), beyond just calling LLM APIs.
- Experience leveraging AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) in the development process.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and align engineers and leaders outside of direct reporting lines.
- Strong programming skills and general Computer Science knowledge.
- Experience working in early-stage startups is a plus.
