About the job

Figma is seeking an Engineering Manager for Observability to lead a team responsible for building and evolving systems that monitor the behavior of Figma's platform and its AI products in production. This role involves owning the core observability stack (metrics, logs, distributed tracing) and the emerging AI observability pipeline, which processes traces, conversations, and model outputs to classify and evaluate AI features. The manager will set strategy, improve instrumentation and data quality, and explore AI-driven approaches for anomaly detection and operational automation. This is a unique opportunity to shape a critical, early-stage platform that underpins all engineering teams at Figma.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a team of 6 engineers focused on the reliability, scalability, and evolution of Figma's observability and AI observability platforms.
  • Own and develop the AI observability ecosystem, including a privacy-safe telemetry pipeline for trace, conversation, and model data, classification, and evaluation workflows.
  • Manage Figma's core observability stack (e.g., Datadog) to ensure high availability, data quality, and a strong signal-to-noise ratio across metrics, logs, and traces.
  • Define the technical strategy for instrumentation standards, libraries, agents, and operators used for service monitoring.
  • Investigate and implement AI-driven solutions for anomaly detection, root cause analysis, signal correlation, and operational automation.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, product engineering, finance, and security teams to provide clear visibility into system health and cost efficiency.
  • Coach and develop engineers, fostering a culture of ownership and high-quality execution.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience leading and growing engineering teams in infrastructure, observability, platform, or AI systems, with a proven track record of delivering reliable production systems at scale.
  • Strong foundation in distributed systems and a platform mindset, building systems for broad adoption.
  • Hands-on experience in observability (metrics, logs, distributed tracing) or AI systems telemetry (traces, classification, evals for AI products).
  • Proficiency with modern tooling such as Datadog, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, or LLM tracing, prompt/model versioning, and eval workflows.
  • High operational standards (instrumentation, data quality, SLO design, incident response) and the ability to set technical direction and drive cross-functional alignment.

Benefits

  • Equity
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Retirement benefits with company contributions
  • Parental leave and reproductive/family planning support
  • Mental health and wellness benefits
  • Paid time off
  • Paid sick leave
  • Holidays
  • Other leave benefits in compliance with applicable laws
