About the job
Decagon is seeking a Senior/Staff Software Engineer to join the Data Lifecycle team. This team builds and maintains the critical infrastructure that governs how sensitive customer data is handled throughout its entire lifecycle, from storage and access control to redaction and deletion. The role involves designing and implementing robust systems that ensure data privacy and compliance across Decagon's conversational AI platform, which serves industry-leading enterprises. You will work closely with product management, governance, and security teams to translate complex privacy requirements into reliable infrastructure and user-configurable products. Engineers on this team own features end-to-end, ensuring the secure and consistent protection of sensitive data across various communication channels and customer systems.
Responsibilities
- Build PII handling and redaction systems to identify and protect sensitive information across conversations, agent traces, and customer data.
- Design configuration abstractions for redaction and retention policies that balance enterprise flexibility with safe defaults.
- Build reliable data deletion workflows that propagate across storage systems and derived data, including retries and verification.
- Develop self-serve tools and APIs for customers to configure, test, and understand their data lifecycle policies.
- Build LLM-backed systems to scan and detect data anomalies and violations.
- Train and/or tune models for detecting various forms of data, including PII and PHI.
- Extend redaction and identification capabilities to multimodal agents (images, attachments, voice notes, documents).
- Build monitoring and auditability systems to track data processing, remaining data, and policy failures without exposing sensitive information.
- Manage data lifecycle systems at scale, handling backfills, partial failures, and safe rollouts for critical flows.
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience building software products with strong product thinking.
- Proficiency in Python and comfort working across the entire technology stack.
- Experience designing reliable backend systems and data pipelines, including asynchronous processing and failure recovery.
- Understanding of operational maturity for critical systems, including observability and monitoring.
- Strong instincts for reasoning about data flow, data persistence, and workflow failures in complex systems.
- High comfort level debugging system failures in deep technology stacks.
- Judgment regarding the balance between shipping speed and the need for correctness, privacy, and irreversible operations.
Benefits
- Equity
- Competitive compensation
