About the job
Cloudflare's IT Asset Management (ITAM) team is rearchitecting internal IT operations, moving away from third-party tools and onto Cloudflare's own platform, including Workers, Durable Objects, D1, and AI Gateway. The goal is to replace purchased solutions with internally built ones, demonstrating Cloudflare's self-sufficiency and establishing a new standard for internal IT platforms.
As a Senior IT Systems Engineer on the IT Platform & Automation pillar, you will be instrumental in designing and building these Cloudflare-native systems. This includes developing MCP servers to connect IT workflows with Cloudflare OS and undertaking full application refactors for asset management, software inventory, and operational automation.
This is a high-ownership, high-autonomy individual contributor role where you will define your technical approach and set the engineering standard for the pillar, operating with significant independence.
Responsibilities
- Architect and build Cloudflare-native replacements for existing ITAM third-party tooling, owning the full technical design.
- Build and own ITAM's internal MCP servers, acting as the integration layer for IT systems, data sources, and workflows with Cloudflare OS and AI tooling.
- Refactor existing IT operational workflows onto Cloudflare's platform, utilizing Workers, Durable Objects, D1, AI Gateway, and Queues.
- Develop AI agents and AI-powered automation to enhance IT operations' speed, accuracy, and reduce manual effort, integrating them natively into the platform.
- Define the data architecture for the future ITAM platform, focusing on clear ownership models, reliable source-of-truth design, and integrations without third-party middleware.
- Lead build-vs-buy decisions, prioritizing building on Cloudflare where feasible and retiring third-party tools once Cloudflare-native alternatives are ready.
- Collaborate with the Software Asset Management (SAM) pillar to understand their operational needs and build the supporting platform.
- Establish engineering standards for the pillar, covering architecture, code quality, documentation, and decision-making processes.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through design reviews and direct technical coaching.
- Oversee the security, compliance, and data governance posture of the built systems.
Requirements
- Strong coding proficiency in TypeScript, Go, Rust, or Bash, with a track record of shipping end-to-end software.
- Excellent systems design instincts, considering ownership boundaries, data flows, failure modes, and long-term maintainability.
- Deep experience in designing and building distributed systems, internal platforms, or greenfield application architecture.
- Experience with modern cloud-native development, with a strong preference for Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, D1, or similar edge/serverless platforms.
- Comfort working independently from initial concept, defining approaches, breaking down complexity, and driving projects to completion.
- Experience building LLM-based tooling in production environments, including agents, MCP servers, context engineering, or AI-assisted workflows.
- A builder's approach to legacy systems, understanding them sufficiently to replace them cleanly rather than maintain them indefinitely.
- Strong communication skills, capable of translating complex technical architecture into clear decisions for non-technical stakeholders.
- Self-directed with a high sense of ownership, managing projects from roadmap to delivery and ongoing operation.
- Ability to be based in Austin, TX, with an expectation of regular onsite presence for a hybrid work arrangement.
