Clay is seeking a backend product engineer to take ownership of the systems that power our customer-facing features. In this role, you will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of a product surface, from initial concept and design through rapid development, customer feedback, and continuous improvement for speed, reliability, and capability. This position requires a blend of product management and engineering expertise, offering numerous challenging problems and technical hurdles to overcome.
Responsibilities
- Own product surfaces end-to-end, from problem definition to measured outcome, influencing product direction.
- Act as a product manager by scoping work with design, data science, and GTM partners, writing specs, and making critical decisions.
- Engage directly with customers to understand their challenges and inform backend product decisions.
- Prioritize rapid iteration and shipping to gather customer feedback quickly.
- Design and build data models, APIs, and jobs for new product capabilities, ensuring performance and reliability under scaling loads.
- Improve codebase performance, reliability, and development velocity through negative maintenance.
- Mentor and learn from other engineers, contributing to team growth and knowledge sharing.
Requirements
- 4+ years of hands-on engineering experience building user-facing products.
- Desire to function as both an engineer and a product manager, driving ownership of product surfaces.
- Strong backend fundamentals including API and schema design, SQL (Postgres preferred), query optimization, and system stability instincts.
- A bias for action, focusing on impact and shipping, learning from production environments.
- Empathetic communication skills, able to articulate complex ideas clearly to various audiences and foster curiosity in disagreements.
- Commitment to code quality, producing bug-free, understandable code and elevating engineering standards.
- Appreciation for diverse perspectives in team building and product development.
