About the job
Clay is seeking a Software Engineer for its Infrastructure and Platform teams. In this role, you will be responsible for the core systems that power all Clay products, focusing on scalability, reliability, and performance. You will work on how work is executed and scheduled at scale, how services handle concurrency, data storage and retrieval with low latency, and building shared foundations that product teams can extend. This is a high-impact role where your work directly influences the ability of product teams to ship new features and innovations.
Responsibilities
- Address bottlenecks in database contention, memory pressure, and throughput ceilings.
- Set and achieve performance and reliability targets as the system scales.
- Define primitives, contracts, and extension points for shared infrastructure.
- Evolve the definition, scheduling, retrying, and observation of work across the product.
- Develop instrumentation for observability to understand system behavior and failures.
- Set technical direction and improve engineering standards through design and code reviews.
Requirements
- 8+ years of hands-on experience building and operating production systems at scale.
- Proven experience diagnosing and fixing issues related to database contention, memory blowups, and throughput ceilings.
- Experience building internal-facing platforms for other engineers.
- Ability to reason about distributed systems, concurrency, queuing, backpressure, and failure recovery.
- Comfort with data models underlying complex systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including writing clear design docs and RFCs.
- Familiarity with React, TypeScript, Python, Node.js, AWS services (Aurora/Postgres, Elasticache/Redis, ECR, ECS/Fargate, Lambda, OpenSearch), Terraform, CircleCI, Netlify, Playwright, CloudWatch, Datadog, Mezmo, ClickHouse, and Dagster, or ability to learn quickly.
Benefits
- Work with world-class coaches specializing in creativity, management, and more.
- Access to community equity round.
- Cross-site engineering organization (NYC and SF).
