Baseten is seeking a Backend/Distributed Systems Engineer to join their Product Platform team. This role is central to Baseten's mission of powering mission-critical AI inference for leading AI companies. You will work on key areas such as commercialization, billing, partnerships, developer productivity, agentic development, and the observability platform. The position offers the opportunity to design and build scalable systems, own core platforms, and contribute to the company's growth at the forefront of AI development.
Responsibilities
- Design and build scalable telemetry ingest and storage pipelines for metrics, logs, and traces.
- Own and evolve core observability platforms, driving reliability and cost improvements.
- Build commercialization and billing systems.
- Work on strategic partnership integrations.
- Develop internal infrastructure and tooling for developer velocity, CI/CD, and deployment safety.
- Own the internal AI agent platform end-to-end.
- Own Baseten's testing strategy, including standards, tiers, and tooling.
- Drive adoption through developer experience, focusing on good defaults and clear documentation.
- Improve platform reliability through better alerting, incident tooling, and debugging workflows.
- Lead technical design for cross-team projects, balancing speed, quality, and maintainability.
- Partner with other teams to understand and meet their needs for faster shipping.
- Raise the engineering bar through code review, mentorship, and technical writing.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience, focusing on scalable backend systems and platforms.
- Experience building or operating observability systems or internal infrastructure at scale.
- Proficiency in Python, Go, Rust, or a similar backend language.
- Strong understanding of quality and engineering principles.
- Strong systems-level thinking and understanding of distributed system interactions.
- Platform mindset, treating internal engineers as customers and prioritizing self-service.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
