Asana's Platform organization is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to serve as the senior technical leader. This role will own the architecture for Asana's products and customers, driving initiatives that are critical to the company's future. You will collaborate with senior leadership to align engineering plans with business outcomes and shape the evolution of the platform, particularly in the context of AI agents and enterprise governance.
Responsibilities
- Set technical direction across Asana's platform, including the Work Graph, APIs, and shared experiences.
- Partner across R&D, Security, and Legal to drive high-stakes, long-term initiatives.
- Establish standards for platform design, focusing on interfaces, separation of concerns, reliability, and functional guarantees.
- Make critical decisions regarding build vs. buy, vendor selection, and replatforming strategies.
- Integrate industry insights, especially regarding AI agents, into R&D strategy with senior leadership.
- Act as the decision-maker for technical questions that span multiple pillars and resolve cross-organizational disagreements.
- Mentor and grow technical leaders, including staff and senior staff engineers.
- Represent Asana's platform engineering externally through talks and writing, and contribute to recruiting efforts.
Requirements
- 12+ years of experience building production software, with significant experience setting technical direction across large organizations.
- Proven experience building scalable platforms for other teams, where architectural decisions have long-term validity.
- Deep expertise in distributed systems and large, shared data models, including performance and reliability for enterprise customers.
- Strong understanding of the impact of AI agents on work platforms and enterprise governance requirements.
- Experience leading major replatforming or migration projects in systems that required continuous operation.
- Excellent communication skills, able to engage with engineers and executives, and translate between technical and business language.
- Demonstrated ability to grow senior technical talent and foster collaboration.
- Experience with multi-tenant enterprise SaaS, security, and data governance for AI systems is a plus.
- Curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies, with a willingness to learn and apply them.
