About the job
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Life Sciences team, you will build and maintain biology software for use by Anthropic's scientists and the wider research community. This role involves accelerating biological progress with AI, combining frontier models with hands-on research. You will be responsible for the quality and reliability of released tools, pipelines, datasets, and benchmarks in genomics and structural biology, ensuring they are usable, trustworthy, and well-documented for external researchers. You will also represent the team within the computational biology community, contributing to public repositories, answering issues, and speaking at conferences. The role emphasizes using AI coding agents heavily in the software development lifecycle, holding agent-generated code to the same high standards as manually written code.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain biology software in genomics and structural biology for internal and external researchers and AI agents.
- Own the process from research code to public release, including testing, validation, benchmarking, documentation, and packaging.
- Maintain released software by triaging issues, reviewing contributions, and managing changes.
- Represent the team in the biology community through conferences, workshops, and direct engagement with researchers.
- Partner with scientists to transform research code into well-tested, reusable software.
- Lead the technical direction of projects through design and code reviews, and potentially lead a small team.
- Utilize AI coding agents as a primary development tool and ensure rigorous verification of agent-generated code.
Requirements
- Experience building, releasing, and maintaining biology software adopted by external researchers.
- Deep expertise in genomics or structural biology, including data types, file formats, tools, and common failure modes.
- Proficiency in Python and experience with large datasets in Linux and cloud/cluster environments.
- Experience with rigorous testing and release engineering practices (unit/integration tests, CI, validation, packaging, versioning).
- Experience using AI coding tools and verifying the correctness and performance of non-hand-written code.
- Experience leading technical projects with multiple contributors, setting direction, and reviewing work.
- Ability to clearly explain technical work to both biologists and engineers, in writing and in person.
