About the job

Vapi is seeking a Backend Product Engineer to own critical systems that power over a million developers building voice agents. This role involves tackling complex backend challenges related to durable APIs, real-time workflows, observability, and the reliable operation of non-deterministic systems. You will be instrumental in moving voice agents from compelling demos to dependable production-ready solutions at scale. The work is described as genuinely hard and unusually fun, offering a chance to build the human interface for every business.

Responsibilities

  • Build and improve backend systems for agent self-improvement, trust, and guardrails.
  • Design APIs, services, and data models for customer-facing features.
  • Define evaluation and rollout criteria for new systems.
  • Instrument and monitor deployed systems.
  • Operate as an independent owner for customer-facing backend areas, managing the full improvement loop.
  • Contribute to product decisions and deliver multiple meaningful improvements in production.
  • Integrate with LLM, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and telephony systems.
  • Use AI coding agents as a throughput and quality lever.

Requirements

  • Proven track record operating at senior or staff scope, independently owning customer-facing backend product areas.
  • Strong hands-on experience with TypeScript/Node.js, Go, or a comparable backend stack.
  • Ability to design clear APIs, services, and data models.
  • Experience building distributed or asynchronous systems with databases, queues, workflows, or event-driven patterns.
  • Strong product judgment, starting with user problems and translating requirements into technical approaches.
  • Demonstrated production ownership, including testing, observability, reliability, and incident response.
  • Regular, thoughtful use of AI-assisted development tools.
  • Self-direction, customer empathy, and clear communication skills.
  • Experience with Postgres and high-volume, event-driven systems (nice-to-have).
  • Experience with real-time systems, voice or telephony, LLM-powered products, or AI agents (nice-to-have).
  • Experience operating cloud-native services on AWS and Kubernetes/EKS (nice-to-have).
  • Experience building developer platforms, public APIs, SDKs, or dashboards (nice-to-have).

Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Excellent equity ownership
  • Comprehensive health coverage (medical, dental, vision)
  • Flexible time off
  • Catered meals
  • Transportation
  • Gym membership
  • Equipment
  • $10k annual L&D budget
  • Quarterly off-sites
