About the job
Ultra is seeking a Product Engineer, AI Enablement to develop and deploy internal tools that enhance AI utilization across the company. This role involves collaborating with various teams to identify AI opportunities, build reliable internal tools and workflows, and ensure their adoption. You will be part of the Software team, focusing on both the software development lifecycle for AI tools (coding agents, reviews, testing) and empowering non-engineering colleagues with AI-driven automations. The position is production-oriented, requiring evaluation of commercial tools, development of custom solutions, and measurement of impact and adoption. This is an in-person role in NYC, offering direct visibility into Ultra's operations.
Responsibilities
- Own AI tooling adoption across Ultra, identifying opportunities, building/integrating solutions, and driving usage.
- Develop the internal AI stack, including services, workflows, interfaces, model integrations, and agent infrastructure.
- Enhance agent competence and trustworthiness within Ultra's codebase and systems for improved code review, testing, and CI.
- Collaborate with operations, deployment, data, and business teams to create leverageable workflows and hand off maintainable systems.
- Build a reusable layer with connectors, shared context, templates, examples, and guardrails for broader extensibility.
- Evaluate the AI tooling ecosystem to determine adoption, composition, or custom build strategies.
- Partner with infrastructure and security teams to ensure secure and effective access for AI tools.
- Measure adoption, productivity, and trust in AI tools, scaling successful solutions and retiring ineffective ones.
Requirements
- Strong software engineering fundamentals with the ability to ship quickly (backend services, internal tools, integrations, automation, interfaces).
- Experience shipping agentic systems or LLM-powered tools used by real people, with an understanding of their limitations.
- Fluency with modern AI coding tools and strong opinions on their application.
- Ability to discern when to build, buy, or use conventional scripting.
- Proficiency in treating evaluations, permissions, secrets, and safe rollout as integral product components.
- Skill in working with non-engineers to translate ambiguous workflows into scoped and useful solutions.
- Clear written communication and comfort driving adoption beyond just coding.
- Minimum of 4 years of production software experience, with demonstrated success in shipping similar systems.
