Toast is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Voice AI Team. This role will be instrumental in building and operating the voice platform that powers Toast and developing novel applications on top of it. This is a greenfield opportunity where the platform and its use cases are being defined, and your work will be foundational for years to come. You will take end-to-end ownership of significant projects, including system design, execution, and technical decision-making. Collaboration with product, engineering, and stakeholders across Toast will be key to transforming ambiguous problems into reliable, scalable systems.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, deploy, and maintain highly resilient and scalable backend services and core platform components for Toast's Voice AI platform.
- Lead complex, cross-cutting projects from design through production, ensuring alignment across stakeholders.
- Shape the technical direction by making architectural decisions and defining patterns.
- Build and evolve integrations with AI platforms and internal Toast systems, balancing speed, reliability, and scalability.
- Establish and implement patterns for observability, monitoring, and evaluation frameworks for AI-powered systems.
- Set and uphold engineering quality standards and best practices.
- Mentor engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and technical guidance.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience with object-oriented languages like Java or Kotlin.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience developing AI-integrated products or features, with a practical understanding of shipping systems incorporating LLMs or other AI capabilities.
- Experience building and reasoning about AI-powered systems, including nondeterminism, evaluation strategies, observability, and cost management.
- Experience shipping complex, mission-critical production services and owning them long-term.
- Track record of leading multi-person and multi-team projects end-to-end.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and production reliability.
- Basic familiarity with frontend development.
- Strong cross-team communication and collaboration skills.
- Actively uses AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) and has influenced others to become more proficient with them.
- Experience with voice or conversational AI platforms is a plus.
