Toast is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager for Toast IQ to lead a team at the forefront of LLMs and agentic workflows. This role will focus on automating and improving backend processes to allow customers to concentrate on their core hospitality business. You will collaborate with Design and Product teams to create AI experiences that enhance the Toast ecosystem. The position involves shaping technical vision, managing platform development, and establishing AI toolchain standards.
Responsibilities
- Shape and steer the technical vision and execution for Toast IQ.
- Manage the platform for internal teams to build and expand upon, improving documentation, feature lifecycle management, and evaluation.
- Break down large initiatives into clear, incremental milestones and deliver measurable outcomes.
- Establish and uphold AI toolchain standards, architecture patterns, and best practices.
- Coach and mentor engineers and managers.
- Operate effectively in a fast-moving environment balancing experimentation, iteration, and platform stability.
- Champion the use of AI tools and practices to accelerate development and improve team velocity.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience leading high-performing engineering teams in production environments.
- Strength in modern backend architecture, including scalable APIs, microservices, and performance optimization.
- Fluency in modern mobile and web architecture, including component libraries, build systems, CI/CD, and microfrontend patterns.
- Experience owning or contributing to internal developer platforms.
- Interest and understanding of LLMs and agents, including their appropriate application.
- Demonstrated success partnering with product and design stakeholders to deliver crafted experiences.
- Ability to translate strategic goals into technical roadmaps and execution plans.
- Strong communication and leadership skills with experience influencing senior leaders.
- Track record of mentoring engineers and building inclusive teams.
