Thinking Machines Lab is seeking a developer productivity engineer to enhance internal software development processes, focusing on safety, speed, and user experience. This role will concentrate on AI tools and coding agents, collaborating with platform, security, and product engineers to build cutting-edge tooling for AI-assisted software development and significantly accelerate the inner development loop. The position involves both establishing company-wide platforms and assisting individual developers in optimizing their workflows.
Responsibilities
- Enable researchers and engineers to use AI for improved coding productivity without sacrificing code quality.
- Standardize and maintain AI coding tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex, integrating org-wide configurations with individual preferences.
- Develop secure, reproducible agent sandboxes for remote development and CI testing.
- Establish golden-path development environments and implement guardrails for secrets and PII.
- Assist individual contributors in developing personalized AI-enabled workflows.
- Monitor tool usage, reliability, and associated costs.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent industry experience in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
- Experience developing productivity tools and best practices for large codebases.
- Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate with researchers to build and manage internal tools.
- Hands-on experience with container platforms (e.g., Docker/Kubernetes), modern CI (GitHub Actions/Buildkite), and package management tools (uv).
- Practical experience with AI coding tools and model APIs (e.g., OSS via vLLM / SGLang / TGI).
- Solid Linux/networking fundamentals, with comfort in secrets management and safe egress.
- Proficiency in systems programming languages (e.g., Rust) and scripting languages (e.g., Python).
