Synthesia is seeking a Principal Research Engineer to lead the technical direction for offline video generation. This role involves owning the end-to-end process, from pre-training to post-training, and resolving the complexities that arise at scale. You will partner with research leadership to define long-term strategy, tackle challenging technical problems, and accelerate the delivery of research into production. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience training large generative models from scratch and is driven by a passion for pushing the boundaries of video generation and ensuring that work reaches users.
Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end technical direction for offline video generation, spanning pre-training and post-training.
- Partner with research leadership and team leads to define a unified long-term roadmap and drive execution.
- Identify and resolve critical technical gaps across the video generation pipeline.
- Increase the velocity at which research ships to product by accelerating problem-solving and improving handoffs.
- Coach and elevate junior researchers and engineers toward senior technical thinking and execution.
- Help shape team structure and refine processes for high-velocity, cohesive execution across research.
Requirements
- Proven track record training large-scale video generation models from scratch across multiple nodes with millions of hours of data.
- Deep experience with post-training techniques at scale, including RLHF, GRPO, and DPO.
- Proven track record with data quality and willingness to question it.
- Ability to think strategically about multi-year research direction and execute hands-on.
- Strong cross-functional influence to shape team collaboration.
- Leadership style grounded in technical involvement, leading by example.
- Genuine hunger to unlock new capabilities and an obsession with shipping.
