Synthesia, a leader in AI video for business, is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead its growing Application Security (AppSec) team. This role is crucial for securing the company's engineering and research organization as it scales, with a focus on building AI-native security tooling and embedding security throughout the development lifecycle. The ideal candidate will be a technically adept leader who can earn the trust of senior engineers, engage deeply in areas like threat modeling and agentic security tooling, and own the AppSec strategy. This position requires a hands-on approach to enable the team's success and foster a secure development environment within a rapidly growing AI-focused company.
Responsibilities
- Lead, support, and grow the AppSec team, including hiring, onboarding, performance, and career development.
- Enable the team to achieve its goals and provide an optimal working environment.
- Own the formalization of AppSec strategy and roadmap, translating team input, business risk, and engineering context into a prioritized program.
- Serve as a credible technical partner, engaging substantively on threat models, security architecture, agentic tooling design, and risk decisions.
- Define and maintain the team's operating rhythm, including OKRs, quarterly planning, cross-team coordination, and stakeholder communication.
- Act as a key interface between AppSec and the rest of the organization and leadership, building relationships to embed security.
- Participate in maintaining and evolving Synthesia's approach to AI-assisted development security.
- Own AppSec's relationship with the broader Security function, ensuring alignment on shared risks and initiatives.
- Represent AppSec externally with customers, auditors, and in compliance programs.
Requirements
- Security Engineer background with experience in leadership.
- Comfortable engaging in technical details and organizational management.
- Strong communication skills across technical and leadership audiences.
- Strong engineering background in application security, with hands-on experience in threat modeling, secure design review, SAST/SCA tooling, vulnerability management, and/or security automation.
- Proficiency in Python and JavaScript.
- Experience with AWS and/or GCP from a cloud infrastructure perspective.
- Familiarity with GitHub Actions.
- Meaningful people management experience, including hiring, growing, and performance-managing security engineers.
- Experience leading or significantly contributing to an AppSec program in a fast-growing SaaS or AI company.
- A strong point of view on AI-native security engineering, including LLMs and agentic tools.
- Experience in an environment with a mature engineering culture and understanding of embedding security.
