Anthropic is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own and enhance the inner development loop for engineers and researchers building Claude. This role focuses on optimizing the developer experience by making environment setup fast, designing secure isolation for local experimentation, and implementing pre-push validation to catch issues early. The engineer will also influence the evolution of the company's repository and platform topology, working closely with infrastructure teams. A key aspect of this role involves integrating Claude as an AI coding collaborator into the development workflow, requiring a candidate who already builds with AI assistants and has insights into their effective use.
Responsibilities
- Own the local and hosted development environment end-to-end, including container lifecycle, dependency provisioning, and hot reload.
- Reduce and maintain low cold-start times for development environments as the codebase grows.
- Design and implement environment isolation models (e.g., sandboxes, ephemeral environments) for safe experimentation.
- Build and maintain a pre-push validation layer to catch failures before they reach CI.
- Collaborate with platform, infrastructure, and tooling teams to shape repository and service topology for a fast inner loop.
- Act as a technical lead across teams, gathering requirements, building consensus, and advocating for optimal approaches.
Requirements
- Significant professional software engineering experience in backend or developer infrastructure.
- Proficiency in Python.
- Hands-on experience with containers (Docker or equivalent), Kubernetes, and pod-level operations.
- Prior ownership of a developer environment, build system, or paved-path workflow with demonstrable adoption.
- Experience working across team boundaries to deliver engineer-dependent infrastructure.
- Daily, hands-on use of AI coding assistants in your development workflow.
