About the job
Snorkel AI is seeking a leader to manage a portfolio of Coding Fellows who create high-quality technical content for training and evaluating AI systems. This people-first role focuses on the management layer across multiple projects, encompassing expectations, performance, support, development, and administration. While technical depth is necessary to understand and discuss Fellow work, the primary responsibility is people management rather than day-to-day technical leadership.
Responsibilities
- Build trusted relationships with Coding Fellows through regular one-on-ones and ongoing communication.
- Understand each Fellow's strengths, goals, challenges, and support needs.
- Set clear expectations for quality, reliability, collaboration, communication, flexibility, learning, and professional conduct.
- Gather and synthesize feedback across projects, accounting for assignment complexity and context.
- Recognize strong performance, provide candid feedback, and address concerns through improvement plans.
- Review representative work (code, pull requests, annotations, documentation) to understand quality and development needs.
- Partner with project managers and technical leads to establish clear expectations and resolve conflicts.
- Hold career conversations to help Fellows grow as individual contributors or specialists.
- Monitor quality, throughput, reliability, and team health using contextualized metrics.
- Contribute to hiring and workforce planning for the program.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in software engineering, technical leadership, or a related environment.
- Direct management experience with programmers or software engineers.
- Demonstrated experience in hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance reviews, and delivering actionable feedback.
- Experience managing people across multiple projects, clients, or teams.
- Experience in a consultancy, software agency, or similar distributed environment is strongly preferred.
- Sufficient technical depth to read and discuss code, assess engineering judgment, and understand software development practices.
- Ability to evaluate performance thoughtfully, not solely based on throughput or volume.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Sound judgment, discretion, empathy, and a collaborative approach.
