Sarvam is building India's full-stack sovereign AI platform, focusing on research, models, infrastructure, and applications to make AI work for India. The company partners with leading enterprises and public institutions. We are hiring hands-on technical owners for our conversational AI platform, Samvaad, which powers millions of personalized voice calls daily. The Staff Engineer will own the end-to-end backend system for agent, campaign, and user management, including data modeling, APIs, orchestration, reliability, and performance.
Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end backend for agent, campaign, and user management, from data modeling through API design to deployment, in Python and FastAPI.
- Implement workflow orchestration with Temporal for complex, long-running, stateful operations.
- Ensure performance and reliability for a multi-tenant SaaS platform operating at sub-second latency SLOs.
- Develop observability solutions (logging, metrics, tracing) for confident and quick production debugging.
- Build and maintain integration testing infrastructure to enable fast, safe deployments.
- Collaborate closely with the frontend team (Next.js) to deliver a high-quality user experience.
- Establish a design-first and documentation-first engineering culture, emphasizing RFCs and written decisions.
Requirements
- 8-12 years of experience building production backend systems.
- Deep expertise in Python and FastAPI (or Golang).
- Proven ability to orchestrate high-volume, personalized campaigns and long-running conversations with strong reliability.
- Track record of full-stack ownership, including system design, trade-offs, and production operation.
- Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration at scale, preferably Temporal.
- Experience building and operating high-scale distributed systems (multi-tenant, low-latency, resilient).
- Strong fundamentals in PostgreSQL and Redis, including schema design, query performance, and caching strategy.
- Excellent judgment for build vs. buy, optimize vs. ship, and abstract vs. inline decisions.
- Experience building products on top of LLMs or AI/ML systems (nice to have).
- Background in telephony, VoIP, or SIP infrastructure (nice to have).
- Experience at an early- or growth-stage startup, comfortable with ambiguity, speed, and ownership (nice to have).
