About the job
Salesforce is seeking a Software Engineer, Senior Member of Technical Staff (SMTS), to design, build, automate, and operate reliable, secure, and scalable cloud infrastructure and production platforms. This role involves collaborating with software engineers, infrastructure teams, security partners, and product teams to enhance service availability, deployment reliability, operational efficiency, and developer productivity. The ideal candidate will possess strong experience in software development, public cloud and cloud-native technologies, infrastructure automation, CI/CD, observability, and production operations, with a practical, AI-first approach to engineering. This is an engineering-focused development role where automation and software development are expected to replace repetitive manual operations, requiring a methodical approach to ambiguous infrastructure and production problems and an understanding of system behavior across application and infrastructure layers.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, automate, and operate reliable, secure, and scalable cloud infrastructure and production platforms.
- Improve service availability, deployment reliability, operational efficiency, and developer productivity.
- Apply an AI-first approach to engineering, utilizing AI tools to enhance work speed, fluency, and contribution.
- Develop maintainable, production-quality automation, tools, services, or APIs.
- Build, maintain, or improve CI/CD pipelines and automated workflows for build, test, deployment, and release.
- Troubleshoot complex production issues across application, infrastructure, networking, and cloud layers.
- Work across the software and infrastructure delivery lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, incident response, and continuous improvement.
- Use AI development tools or techniques for automation, software development, troubleshooting, testing, debugging, and documentation.
- Diagnose complex infrastructure and production problems systematically.
- Collaborate effectively across engineering and operational teams.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience designing and building production software (full-stack applications, backend services, developer tools, or internal platforms).
- Strong programming skills across frontend, backend, APIs, data stores, and distributed system boundaries.
- Experience designing, deploying, or operating production workloads on public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Development or automation experience using Java, Python, Go, or a similar programming language.
- Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure concepts (compute, storage, networking, load balancing, IAM, security, HA, DR).
- Experience with containerization and cloud-native technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, or comparable).
- Demonstrated AI-first approach to engineering, using AI tools for efficiency and contribution.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code and configuration automation (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, Helm, or comparable).
- Experience building, maintaining, or improving CI/CD pipelines and automated workflows.
- Familiarity with databases (Postgres, HBase, Oracle, or similar) and cluster technologies (e.g., Oracle RAC).
- Experience with Linux systems and fundamental OS, networking, process, memory, storage, and performance concepts.
- Experience with production observability (logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, alerting).
- Understanding of distributed-system and reliability concepts (scalability, fault tolerance, resiliency, dependencies, capacity, availability, performance).
- Experience troubleshooting complex production issues across multiple layers.
- Experience using AI development tools or techniques for automation, development, troubleshooting, testing, debugging, and documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for systematic diagnosis of complex issues.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for cross-team collaboration.
