About the job

Salesforce AI Labs is seeking a Principal Engineer to join a team of 10 focused on bringing computer-use AI into production. This role involves building the Systems Integration Agent, which learns to operate enterprise applications and automates complex workflows. You will tackle challenging engineering questions related to agent success, reasoning, recovery, and human intervention. The position offers a unique opportunity to work directly with customers, shape architectural decisions, and mentor other engineers, all while remaining hands-on in a fast-paced, startup-like environment within a large organization.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build systems that learn from demonstrations and combine AI reasoning with deterministic execution for reliable workflow completion.
  • Develop recovery and verification capabilities for agents to adapt to changes, confirm outcomes, and identify the need for human intervention.
  • Build backend services with robust workflow state management, failure handling, and secure access to customer environments.
  • Create evaluations and diagnostics to measure task success, expose regressions, and make failures understandable.
  • Collaborate with customers to understand workflows, prototype solutions, and validate results in their environments.
  • Investigate automation successes and failures to drive improvements in the core product.
  • Guide customers towards repeatable, increasingly self-service adoption of automation.
  • Partner with forward-deployed engineers and product management to influence the product roadmap based on customer needs.
  • Lead architectural decisions across agent execution, backend services, and workflow state.
  • Evaluate model selection, tool use, and context management considering reliability, latency, and cost.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to hiring efforts to raise the engineering bar.

Requirements

  • Led the architecture and delivery of complex backend systems through deployment, production failures, and improvements, impacting multiple components or teams.
  • Hands-on experience shipping and operating LLM-powered systems, with the ability to explain how evaluations and production failures informed design decisions.
  • Proficiency in reasoning through concurrency, persistent state, retries, and partial failures in systems performing consequential actions.
  • Proficient in Python, Go, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Ability to translate unclear customer problems into bounded technical approaches, test them with users, and lead them through production.
  • Desire for direct customer engagement, including problem investigation and discussion of technical tradeoffs.
  • Thoughtful use of AI development tools and responsibility for the correctness, security, and maintainability of shipped code.
