As an Economist at Anthropic, you will play a crucial role in measuring and understanding the profound effects of AI on the global economy. You will lead the development of the Anthropic Economic Index, establishing innovative methodologies to track AI's usage, diffusion, and impact using privacy-preserving tools and unique data sources. This role requires applying frontier methods in econometrics, machine learning, and structural estimation to drive significant impact, influencing both external policy discussions and Anthropic's internal business and product strategies. Our team focuses on rigorous empirical methods and novel measurement approaches, building datasets that analyze AI's influence on labor markets, productivity, and economic transformation.
Responsibilities
- Contribute fundamentally to the development and expansion of the Anthropic Economic Index, including quarterly reports and industry-specific analyses.
- Design and execute empirical research on AI's economic effects, utilizing external data and internal privacy-preserving measurement systems.
- Develop new methodologies to study AI's impact on labor markets, productivity, economic inequality, industry disruption, and aggregate economic trajectories.
- Create causal-inference tooling to evaluate the economic consequences of Anthropic's compute, product, and pricing decisions.
- Foster and maintain relationships with academic institutions, policy think tanks, and other research partners.
- Collaborate with technical teams to enhance measurement infrastructure and data collection.
- Translate research findings into actionable recommendations for product development and policy.
- Promote external engagement through publications, policy briefs, and presentations.
Requirements
- PhD in Economics.
- Strong background in empirical research, especially studies combining novel data sources with economic theory or employing advanced causal inference and machine learning methods.
- Experience relevant to studying AI's economic impact, including labor market analysis, task-based approaches, large-scale data analysis, econometric methods, LLMs for social science, policy-relevant research, causal inference methods, macroeconomic modeling, and agent-based modeling.
- Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or similar data analysis tools.
- Experience with novel datasets and measurement systems.
- Willingness to learn new technical tools and frameworks.
- Proven ability to lead complex research projects from inception to publication.
- Skill in communicating technical findings to diverse audiences.
- Experience building relationships across academic, policy, and industry sectors.
- A strong interest in ensuring AI development benefits humanity.
- Comfort working with AI systems and critically evaluating their capabilities and limitations.
